📚 What is Bacteriostatic Water?

Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. It is used in laboratory settings to reconstitute lyophilized (freeze-dried) compounds. The benzyl alcohol inhibits microbial growth, allowing the reconstituted solution to remain stable for multiple uses over an extended period.

BAC water differs from sterile water for injection in that it can be used multiple times from the same vial due to its preservative properties, while sterile water is single-use only.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your vial strength — the total mg of lyophilized compound in the vial (check the vial label).
  2. Choose a target concentration (mg/mL) — this determines how much BAC water to add. Lower concentrations use more water and are easier to measure precisely.
  3. Or select a water volume — if you have a specific amount of BAC water you want to use, select it in Step 3 and the calculator will show the resulting concentration.

The calculator will display the exact volume of bacteriostatic water to add and the resulting solution concentration.

💡 Common Concentrations

Typical reconstitution concentrations used in research settings:

  • 1 mg/mL — Dilute solution, easiest for precise small-volume measurements
  • 2.5 mg/mL — Standard research concentration, good balance of precision and volume
  • 5 mg/mL — Moderate concentration, common for larger-quantity compounds
  • 10 mg/mL — Concentrated solution, uses less BAC water per vial

⚠️ Important Notes

  • Always use bacteriostatic water (not regular sterile water) when multiple withdrawals from the vial are anticipated.
  • Store reconstituted solutions at 2-8°C (refrigerated) unless otherwise specified.
  • Reconstituted solutions with BAC water are generally stable for up to 28 days when refrigerated.
  • Direct the BAC water gently along the inside wall of the vial — do not spray directly onto the lyophilized compound.
  • Allow the compound to dissolve naturally. Do not shake or vortex vigorously.
